The airlines were onto something when they coined the phrase, “Put your oxygen mask on first, and then assist others”, but it’s unlikely they were thinking of it as an act of self-care! The Parents Association Wellness Committee created the time, space and programming for parents to experience a morning of yoga with teacher, Sandy Cahill of Lifetime Fitness, and a self-compassion activity with Brookwood’s Wellness Coordinator, Jean Skaane. Skaane spoke of how easy it is to look outside of ourselves and lend a compassionate hand or embrace to a friend or family member in need, yet giving ourselves the gift of a yoga practice or a walk on the beach, meeting a friend for dinner, taking a warm bath, sleeping in an extra 15 minutes or savoring a cup of coffee or tea are all small acts of love and compassion for ourselves that we often put aside. Parents reflected on the ways in which they currently practice self-compassion, and considered areas they can experience more of it.
