Upper School Update 4/6 & Samson Strolls

Dear Upper School Parents and Guardians,

We are venturing into an exciting time of year with a plethora of exciting events happening. We have student-led conferences next week, recitals, a 7th-grade play, an Art celebration, a recess regatta, an Upper School dance, spring sports, a bike-to-school day, and probably so much more. I look forward to seeing you on campus this spring! Please see the announcements and updates below.

Spring Semester Grades and Comments: Parents with students in grades 6th - 8th will find Spring Semester grades and comments in your veracross portals. (Click on the word "Reports" seen next to their children's names and Click on the link for "First Half Spring Term")

Please remember that these progress reports are not permanent, and students will have approximately nine more weeks to continue or improve their efforts before the end of the school year. It's plenty of time to rescue a low grade or change a habit that isn't serving a student well. New this spring, the comments are addressed to your children. Please share these carefully crafted comments with them, and there will be an opportunity during the student-led conferences to discuss.

SAMSON STROLLS: I visited 7th Grade History this week. Please click here to learn more about the classes. If there is something you would like to see this semester, please email me!

SLC Conference: We look forward to seeing you for student-led conferences next week. We hope these conferences provide another way for you to get involved in your child’s education and see them take ownership of their learning this year. While we anticipate most of the questions below to be answered during the conference, these questions are also great for you to ask to promote more conversation.

  • What are you most proud of in your schoolwork this year?

  • What goals did you set for yourself at the beginning of the school year, and how have you progressed towards achieving them?

  • Can you share one challenge you faced this year and how you overcame it?

  • What new skills or knowledge have you acquired this year that you are excited about?

  • How have you grown as a person this year, both academically and personally?

  • How do you manage your time and stay organized with your schoolwork?

  • Can you share an example of how you collaborated with your classmates on a project or assignment?

  • What are your strengths as a learner, and what areas do you think you need to work on?

  • How do you feel about your progress this year, and what do you think you can do to improve even further?

  • What are some ways that I can support you in your learning going forward?

Resolving Conflicts: Yesterday, Dr. Burch visited Brookwood and spoke to Upper School students about Conflict: And what we can do about it. Students applied the STOP skill and the DEARMAN steps to specific scenarios and brought the tools home to help with conflicts in their own lives. Dr. Burch will be back on campus on April 20 from 8:30 - 9:30 to speak with parents.
