Upper School Updates June 22, 2023

Dear Upper School Parents and Guardians,

Last week was a fabulous end to the school year with exciting Steep Day options, an incredibly moving Salute, and a beautiful graduation. As we prepare for Summer break and put the finishing touches on another year of learning and growth, I’d like to reflect on what we've accomplished together in the Upper School and how each year builds on the previous year, feeling more inspiring and exciting.

The 2022-2023 school year continued with the amazing traditions of Revels, the 8th Grade Play, Declamation, and more. Some of the other notable accomplishments this year include:

  • Reconfiguration of classroom spaces in the Upper School Hallway and Upstairs, which allowed a dance studio, a student center, a wellness room, a breakout math room, and 6th graders to have homeroom and classes upstairs with 5th graders.

  • A Math Specialist that helped our students and faculty

    • Dreambox - conceptual understating and more individualized exploration of math

  • ChangeMaking and Wellness classes were included in the schedule for all students in grades 5th - 8th

  • 5th and 7th Grade Hunger Drive that raised a record-setting 4022 pounds

  • 6th Grade joining the athletic program and competing with the 7th and 8th graders against other schools

  • Dean of Students and Community - available to meet with students and parents and help plan curriculum and activities for students.

  • More athletic offerings, which included golf and tennis. Disc golf is coming next year!

  • 11 Steep Day Offerings ranging from fashion to sailing to rock climbing

  • Student Led Conferences

  • International trip to Israel with 7th and 8th grader students

  • Partnerships established or reestablished with outside organizations and our students: The Trustees, Turtle Creek Senior Center

  • Two half-hour Art recesses each week

  • Affinity Groups Meeting Every Week: Two regularly scheduled SOCKz and Rainbow Connection meeting each month

  • Capstone Art Exhibit and reception for 8th-grade students

Thank you to the commitment and dedication of our Upper School faculty and staff. They have incredible connections with your students, which promotes the deep learning that happened in and outside the classroom this year. I look forward to even more that we will accomplish together next year.

Save the Date - Camp Caribou & The Farm School - Sept 13 - 15

7th Grade Students will start the school year going to Camp Caribou in Winslow, Maine. The Caribou trip is a longstanding Brookwood tradition, offering a unique opportunity for community-building and personal challenge via the high-ropes course.

We are excited for our 8th-grade students to return to the Farm School! 8th graders will find value in real farm work and build a strong class community that will persist when they return to Brookwood. The trip provides a first-hand experience of what it means to be stewards of the earth. We will have an information session about both trips in early September.

Congratulations to the class of 2023, and Happy Summer to all members of the Brookwood community!
