Yoga is widely known for providing physical benefits such as balance, flexibility and strength, but it is also a purposeful and intentional practice (mindfulness) drawing ones attention to the parts of the body; the thoughts arising in the mind (“this hurts”, “I can’t do it”, or “I really like this”); the breath; and the physiological and mental outcomes of the time on the mat. Numerous studies have found the perceived benefits of yoga in children and adolescents to include: greater attention, concentration, joy, self-esteem, self-confidence, and physical well-being. It seems the students of Brookwood are recognizing the benefits as they ask for more time on the mat!
